We recommend adding and maintaining one or more “List” custom fields in your Keap app. We have probably configured this for your Keap app already.
Technical Level: 2 out of 5.
Who should read this?: Any Keap user responsible for optimising Keap mailing list quality.
“List” custom fields
We typically configure on or more custom fields in your Keap app for you, after discussing your requirements.
Here are three typical custom fields and what they can be used for.
| Email Status | Meaning |
| List: News | A Yes/No field allowing you or your contacts to opt in, or out of, your general news email broadcasts. |
| List: Ownership | A Yes/No field allowing you or your contacts to opt in, or out of, your ownership promotional emails. |
| List: Runners | A Yes/No field allowing you or your contacts to opt in, or out of, your raceday runners emails. |
How are these fields used?
When sending an email broadcast, use these List custom fields to define your audience.
First configure Contact Groups that filter for these List fields. We typically configure this for you. For example:
- Add new Contact group
- Apply filter “List: News does not equal NO”
- Save the contact group name as “News”
When sending a regular stable/farm update, select the “News” contact group. This ensures any contact who has opted out of receiving your general news emails, is excluded from your audience for that email broadcast.
Repeat for other “List” custom fields configured, such as Ownership or Raceday Runners.
How can a contact update these List fields to opt in out out of certain types of email content
Include these List custom fields in your Email Preferences landing page, and include a link to that landing page at the bottom of every email your send – just above the Unsubscribe link.
Read our article about an Email Preference Centre. Again, we typically configure this for you during implementation.
How can you update these List fields manually
You have two options
Go to the Contact’s profile and click EDIT. You can manually edit the custom fields and set them to Yes or No – to reflect what email content the contact wishes to receive.
Go to the Contact’s profile and click MORE > FORMS. We typically create an ‘Add or Update Subscriber” internal form for you to more easily update important information about a contact.

In that internal form, any List fields created in your app will be visible. Simply select Yes/No where applicable.
